The Queensland Wader Study Group (QWSG) was established in 1992 as a special interest group of Birds Queensland, dedicated to the study and conservation of waders (shorebirds) and their habitat.
QWSG volunteers have conducted monthly high tide roost counts to monitor wader populations from Cooktown to Tweed Heads. The group has been involved in regular surveys of the Great Sandy Strait, Mackay, Townsville and the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Shorebird count data collected by QWSG has been used by all levels of government to assist in the protection of waders and their habitat.
Since the 1990s the QWSG has been active in the use of flagging and tracking to follow the movements of waders nationally and internationally. The group has used the ever-increasing sophisticated technology to obtain the best information possible.
The QWSG has an active education program, teaching people about waders through identification days, local events and school programs.
