Centre for Conservation Science (UoN)

The Centre for Conservation Science at the University of Newcastle (UON) brings together interdisciplinary experts – including conservation biologists, social scientists, and ecologists – to develop science-driven solutions to biodiversity loss, climate change, and ecosystem degradation. Led by researchers like Professor Matthew Hayward, the team focuses on threatened species, rewilding, and, in partnership with other groups, innovative environmental management.

  • Conservation and research in coastal shorebird communities and ecosystems including multiple projects in ecology, movement and behaviour.

  • Threatened Species Conservation: Extensive work on the Parma wallaby, Greater Glider, and Broad-toothed rat.

  • Frog Conservation: Over 30 years of research on infectious diseases, habitat destruction, and, particularly, the Green and Golden Bell Frog.

  • Rewilding and Management: Projects including Rewilding Norfolk and Ngambaa, alongside managing, and, controlling invasive cats.

  • Innovative Solutions: Developing non-invasive biomarkers for stress in, and, amphibians, and, utilizing acoustic detection technologies.
